The peculiarities of American gothic are
inescapable in even a haphazard exploration of the Great Plains. But perhaps
the most unusual creation to be found in the area is the brainchild of one Jim Reinders. Located near Alliance, Nebraska,
Carhenge was built nearly 25 years ago by Reinders as a memorial to his late
father. The monument is a replica of the pre-historic Stonehenge site in
Wiltshire County, England. Except, the Nebraska version is comprised not of
stone but of what remains of Detroit’s former glory. That’s right; Carhenge was
constructed with old Buick, Pontiac, and Cadillac bodies. They are painted gray
to simulate the monolithic stones that formed the original. In the area
surrounding the replica, you will find other examples of “Car Art” arranged in
various designs and decorated in a psychedelic painting style.
