Wanderlust – n. – a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about. An irresistible desire to travel or wander in search of meaning or purpose.
“Travel is like adultery: one is always tempted to be unfaithful to one's own home. To have imagination is inevitably to be dissatisfied with where you live. In our wanderlust, we are lovers looking for consummation.” ~ Anatole Broyard
The desire to travel and move about is one of the most incurable sicknesses a person can have for there is no cure but to indulge that desire from time to time. It comes from somewhere deep within the soul that knows there is something else out beyond the horizon. It is not so much about finding something better or something that has been absent or lacking. It is about discovering something that didn’t exist to you before you learned of its existence. It is that imp of discovery that overwhelms the senses and offers that whisper of a thrill that quickens the beating of your heart that gives meaning to the journey.
One will often discover that a burgeoning spirit full of verve and vigor is the product of knowledge and temporal experience. Wanderlust is the heart’s answer to the wanton disregard of the spirit often accustomed by a lackluster life. A life dripping with passion, with obsession, with excellence is found only when one acquiesces to those aches and pangs caused by wanderlust. To desire more is not a rejection of what you have, but an embracing of what the world has hidden in plain sight for you to discover.
