This is not London Bridge! London Bridge (the one built in 1831) was torn down in 1962 and sold to an American Oilman that used the original bricks to reconstruct a replica in Lake Havasu City, AZ. This notable landmark is Tower Bridge, named so because of its proximity to the Tower of London. Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 as a suspension /bascule bridge. The bascule section (two leaves that can be raised and lowered) in the center was needed to allow commercial water traffic to enter the Pool of London as the East End of London was undergoing an economic revival. Currently, the Tower Bridge Bascules are opened over 1,000 times a year, much to the chagrin of commuters challenging the burgeoning London traffic situation.
