The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família or Sagrada Familia as it is known locally is the crown jewel of Barcelona. As you may have read, Antoni Gaudi left his impression on the city in a way that is equaled by no other architect in any other city in the world. Many of the most interesting and prominent buildings in Barcelona were designed by Gaudi and none are as important or culturally significant as the Sagrada Familia.
One of the first things you notice when you visit the cathedral is that it is not finished. This is because Gaudi himself made the people of Barcelona promise that they would pay for the cathedral with their own money so as to assure cultural and regional independence from Rome and specifically the non-Catalonian regions of Spain. It has been projected that the project that was begun in the Spring of 1882 will not be complete until possibly some time in 2026.
