The famous Casa Batlló or Casa dels ossos (House of Bones) as it is known by the locals was designed by Antoni Gaudí, who designed many of the prominent buildings here in Barcelona. The building was originally built in 1877 and remodeled in the early part of the last century. The leading theory as to the inspiration behind the unusual design of the building is that the spiraling turret to the roof represents the sword of St. George (the patron saint of Cantolonia), that is thrust into the body of a dragon (as evidenced by the spinlike curve of the roof adjacent to the turret). This theory becomes even more compelling when you see that the sides on the stairs leading to the turret resemble that of a reptile.
