Upon capturing Venice, Napoleon remarked that the Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) was the finest drawing room in all of Europe. The square is dominated by the Basilica San Marco (which has the finest example of Byzantine mosaics in western Europe), the Doge's Palace and the Basilica's Campanile. As you can see in the picture above, the square is home to a plethora of birds that will swarm you if you try to feed them. If you are lucky, you will have a chance to visit the square at night after a light rain to see it's iridescent glow emanating from the Doge's Palace.
