The Pantheon was built over two thousand years ago as a temple to the gods by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, one of Octavian's favorite generals and closest friends. Today the word Pantheon is used to describe any building in which the illustrious dead are honored or buried. This is because this building was decorated with the statues of the many gods worshiped by the Romans and for the dominance of the domes circular opening to the heavens on the roof.
In the 7th century, the Pantheon was rededicated as a Roman Catholic Church and is used for special occasions or other high church functions. The Pantheon remains one of the most well preserved structures built by the Romans and is one of the best examples of a Roman Rotunda.
